Short description of the school

Taunton School is a co-educational, independent boarding and day school in the county town of Taunton, Somerset in South West England. It accepts boys and girls from the ages of 0 to 18.

Taunton School has a 56-acre campus with amazing facilities. Lessons are taught in well-equipped, spacious and modern classrooms.

Taunton School was founded in 1847 as a boys-only school for those who were not members of the Church of England (known as dissenters). In September 1971, Taunton School began a merger with Weirfield School, an independent boarding and day school for girls, also located on Staplegrove Road. This resulted in girls being accepted into the Sixth Form. In 1976 the merger was completed with the rest of the senior section of Weirfield School. Thus it became one of the earliest fully co-educational independent schools in England.

The aim of school is to challenge, inspire and nurture young people to succeed in a global community. The School's shared vision is based on five pillars: Academic, Pastoral, Co-Curricular, Global Outlook and Community. The pillars are securely established on a solid foundation of finance, resources and leadership.

The motto of Taunton school is "Ora et labora" - "Worship and Work" (senior school); "Carpe diem" - "Seize the Day" (preparatory school)

Taunton school is made up of 5 parts:

  • Taunton Nursery and Pre-Prep School (0-7 years)
  • Taunton Prep School (7-13 years)
  • Taunton Senior School (13-18 years)
  • The Grange. Taunton International Middle School (8-14 years)
  • Foxcombe. Taunton International School (14-18 years)

The school has a broadly Anglican ethos but welcomes all faiths or none.

More than 40 of our pupils have been offered Oxford or Cambridge places in the last 10 years and approximately 94% of all Sixth Formers take up university or college places either in the UK or overseas. Whilst others join the armed forces, take up apprenticeships or enter the workplace.

School strengths:

Strong Medicine
Our specialised Pre-Med Programme appeals to students who are keen to pursue a career in medicine. It aims to give pupils an insight into the careers of medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. The course will familiarise students with medical terminology, prepare them for interviews, BMAT and UKCAT, develop confident communication and interpersonal skills and encourage independent reading and research.

To date, our Pre-Med students have had 100% success at interviews often receiving offers for all four of their university choices.

Strong Sports
Taunton School has been named the 7th best school for sport in the UK, with outstanding facilities including two large sports halls which include indoor cricket practice facilities, squash courts, a climbing wall, fitness suite and dance studios, as well as astro pitches and pavilions and two excellent indoor swimming pools.

Strong Mathematics
We divide our pupils into sets by ability, with typically six sets in each year. Mathematics in Tauntob is an interesting and challenging course that suits our most able pupils, and provides excellent preparation for further study of mathematics in the Sixth Form whether studying A-Levels or the IB. Many pupils go on to study Maths in the Sixth Form either as A-Level Maths or Further Maths or IB Maths.

Strong Drama
With excellent performance areas at their disposal, including a rehearsal room and large, fully equipped theatre and studio, students at Taunton School flourish as they explore self-expression, creativity and gain confidence whilst honing their performance skills.
Trips to the theatre and participating in our broad range of school productions, including Informal Dance and Drama Evenings, Parents’ Day, Performing Arts Evenings, the Taunton Music and Drama Festival and the National Schools’ Shakespeare Festival, provide additional opportunities to maximise personal and performance development.

Strong Music
The musically talented and inquisitive have access to an extensive Music Department and can join a variety of Ensembles covering a multitude of musical genres and offering plenty of opportunities to perform worldwide. Ensembles include the Orchestra, Wind Band, Dance Band, Advanced Vocal Ensemble, Chapel Choir, Boys’ Choir, Rock Band, String Quartet, Stomp Percussion Ensemble, Funk Band, Saxophone Ensemble and Music Theory Classes.

To showcase their talents, pupils can participate in local, regional, national and international events such as the Taunton Music and Drama Festival, the National Schools’ Shakespeare Festival and the Model United Nations (MUN) to name but a few. Many pupils gain places in the National Youth Orchestra and perform in the National Youth Music Theatre.

Strong Science
With a fully refurbished Chemistry Department at their disposal, pupils benefit from excellent facilities in which to explore chemistry to the full. This includes developing their analysis and evaluating skills, and building on their mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Chemistry is a popular choice in the Sixth Form, with as many as 40 to 50 pupils choosing to explore the subject further at pre-university level. Courses offered include A-Level Chemistry or IB Chemistry at Higher or Standard Level.

Strong Business & Economics
Taunton School is the only UK educational institution to offer a different two-year route to higher education for students interested in careers in Business and Finance.

For 16 and 17-year-olds, we offer a tailor-made Academic programme with modules in maths, business and economics. This prepares students for the globally recognised NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) at 17 or 18. Successful completion of the IFY leads to a guaranteed place at one of more than 40 universities in the UK and around the world.
