Short description of the school
Stonar School is an independent, co-educational independent boarding and day school in the village of Atworth, Wiltshire in South West England. It accepts boys and girls from the ages of 2 to 18.
Stonar is set in a stunning 80 acre campus in rural west Wiltshire, close to both Bath and Chippenham. The school's peaceful location on the outskirts of the village of Atworth ensures pupils benefit from an abundance of space and fresh air.
Stonar was originally established at Stour House in Sandwich which can be traced back as far as 1895. Founded as a single-sex school, the school made the decision to accept boys throughout the Prep School. Following this successful transition, 2016 was our first year of Senior co-education and the school is now fully co-educational.
Pupils have the opportunity to develop a global outlook through the school’s curriculum, trips and collaborative projects with pupils in partner schools. As a member of the Globeducate group, Stonar prides itself in developing pupils who are global citizens.
For riders Stonar offers something unique; Stonar is regarded as the UK’s finest riding academy. The equestrian facilities are at the heart of the school and pupils may bring their own horse to school or loan one of the Stonar stables. Around 40% of pupils ride, but many more non-riders enjoy coming to the stables and patting their favourite ponies at break or lunchtime.
The school is non-denominational but welcomes all faiths or none.

School strengths:
Strong Arts
Stonar has an excellent Creative Arts Department, offering both Art & Photography at GCSE and A Level (which is not very common), as well as Fashion Design & Textiles Diploma in the Sixth Form. Pupils achieve highly in these subjects, benefitting from teaching that encourages them to develop their individual style, whatever their preferred medium.
Strong Science
Stonar's Science Department has been one of the strongest academic areas of the school for decades, often being the most popular subjects studied at A Level with a significant number of graduates progressing to study Science based degrees, typically at Russell Group universities.
Strong Sports
Stonar has the UK's leading equestrian school, combined with fantastic sports facilities for a school of our size - 4 tennis courts, indoor swimming pool, astroturf pitch, large sports hall and sports pitches.
With our small class sizes, individual support and track record for getting the most out of each pupil, Stonar is a trusted environment for your child’s education.
With around 350 pupils and over 60 teachers, Stonar is a school where each pupil is known as an individual. Regardless of whether they are 3 or 18, a pupil is well known by their teachers, form tutors, house parents and fellow pupils across the school.
We develop transferable skills – problem-solving, team working, leadership – young people will need to deal with a future where the only constant is change. We do this through a broad and imaginative curriculum, high expectations, excellent teaching and the high-intensity care that comes from dedicated staff and small classes.
