Short description of the school

Queen Margaret's School is an independent boarding and day school in the village of Escrick six miles from York, North Yorkshire in North East England. It accepts girls aged 11 to 18.

Established in 1901, QM is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18. You will find us in glorious parkland about six miles south of the historic City of York, in the north of England.

Girls do so much better in single-sex education and at QM we see our pupils engaging enthusiastically in a range of activities – academic, sport, extra-curricular and social. No airs and graces, no frills or make-up, just girls getting stuck in, and having fun while they do it. They achieve academically (outstandingly so). They come from a variety of backgrounds and, with an increasing emphasis on the support available, we are proud that we are continuing to make a QM education possible for an increasingly diverse range of girls. Our girls have homes in York, Ripon, Thirsk, Newcastle upon Tyne, Inverness, Hong Kong, Madrid, Frankfurt and Bangkok and many board, not because they have to, but because they want to.

The girls are the focus of life at QM and are at the heart of everything we do. It’s this focus and an individualistic approach that allows our girls to carve their own path, and flourish as formidable, independent women.

The school has a broadly Anglican ethos but welcomes pupils of all faiths or none.

Message from the Head of the school

Headmaster photoQM is a wonderful place – set in the most glorious rural surroundings yet close by to the rich cultural diversity of the city of York. As soon as I first arrived I sensed what a special place it was and I felt an affinity with the School values. Built upon a firm foundation of tradition, QM has a long, established background of nurturing girls into independent confident young ladies equipped with the mindset that they can achieve anything. From this foundation is a modern offer, achieved through an extensive ongoing programme of investment and development in both the high calibre of teaching staff and School facilities. And our success is regularly recognised through various awards; most recently through the shortlists for 'Community Outreach' (2020) and ‘Performing Arts School of the Year’ (2019) of the Independent Schools of the Year Awards, and the ‘Boarding Innovation Award’ presented by the Boarding Schools’ Association (2018).

I want to continue the good work that has gone before me, maintaining the girls’ sense of fun, friendship and pride in their School, whilst encouraging a strong work ethic where girls have a go at all the opportunities a QM education presents. I want our girls to achieve beyond their expectations and become dynamic, grounded and confident individuals well equipped for life beyond QM.

I would encourage you to come and visit us and see everything we have to offer for yourselves.
